A birth injury is any form of injury sustained by the newborn when either in the womb, during delivery or after being delivered which could have been preventable. Depending on the extent of the injury or the type of injury, it can either be classified as a minor injury or a major injury.

Regardless of the form of injury; adequate measures need to be put in place to make sure preventable complications do not happen in the early stages of pregnancy. If proper care is not exercised for both the mother and child, the consequences may result in a permanent damage that may prove impossible to cure or could lead to fatal injuries. In extreme cases, if serious or catastrophic birth injuries are not handled with care and the proficiency needed, it may also result in death of either mother or child.

What are some causes of birth injuries?

The causes may either come naturally from the parent; through genetic illness, also if the mother was sick during delivery or stressed. There are also preventable causes like the negligence by the physicians during delivery or even the parent receiving prescription medication which could cause birth defects or premature birth.

Types of Birth Injuries?

  • Brain injuries: This is one of the common types of birth injuries that comes as a result of oxygen supply in the brain. When the brain lacks enough oxygen, it will automatically react resulting in other disorders in the system such brain ischemia and brain hemorrhage. Brain ischemia comes when the brain responds by draining blood from the brain while on the other hand hemorrhage comes as a result of the excess supply of blood to in the brain.
  • Brachial plexus: Another common type of birth injury which mainly affect the upper part of the arm during delivery. It is primarily characterized by general weakness in the arm and inability to use some of its muscles. Other parts that are likely to be affected by this injuries includes the shoulder and the hands.
  • Muscle injuries: These are those injuries that mainly affect the physical parts of the body. They mostly come as a result of the physicians not practicing a high level of due diligence when either making delivery or handling the newborn shortly after being born.
